The Other "Slim" Shady

Bill Gates is not #1 richest person in the world--there's a new kid on the global block and he is Mexico's telecoms tycoon Carlos Slim who is now worth $67.8bn, above Microsoft founder Mr Gates' $59.2bn. His wealth is in marked contrast to the 53% of Mexico's population that the World Bank says are living in poverty. His worth is equivalent to the average income of 6.3 million Mexicans or roughly the income of 5% of the entire Mexican population.

Not that he is in the Bill Gates class of philanthropy yet, but Slim infused his foundation last year with $1.8 billion dollars. And recently he's pledged $10 billion dollars to health and education programs over the next four years. He also pledged $100 million dollars toward Bill Clinton's Foundation to alleviate poverty in South and Central America.
