I.C. Frat Boys Busted for Supporting "Higher" Education

According to the Gazette

Several members of Delta Upsilon are accused of dealing drugs from the house.

Stephen A. Boyler, 22, who told police he was the fraternity's vice president, is accused of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

Also accused of possession with intent to deliver are Joseph P. Hillegass, 19, and James R. Goetz, 20. All the men live at the fraternity house, 320 Ellis Ave.

Police said the arrests are part of an ongoing narcotics investigation. Other drugs were seized at the house during a search Saturday, and additional charges are pending, said Iowa City Police Sgt. Troy Kelsay.

Delta Upsilon chapter President Dave Wisnowski said Boyler was "definitely not" the group's vice president, but declined further comment. University of Iowa Interfraternity Council spokesman Mark Liston could not immediately be reached by The Gazette for comment.

Police searched the house at 6:02 a.m. Saturday and seized four safes, cash, illegal drugs including high-grade marijuana, packaging materials, scales and ledgers, Kelsay said.

They found a safe containing marijuana packaged for resale in Boyler's room, cash, packaging materials and more than two ounces of marijuana in Hillegass' room, and a safe with more than a pound and a half of high-grade marijuana, packaging materials, ledgers and $1120 cash in Goetz' room, he said.

Another fraternity member and a guest are accused of possession of a controlled substance, a serious misdemeanor.

The Iowa City Police Department's Street Crimes Action Team began the investigation after receiving information that members of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity were selling high-grade marijuana out of the fraternity house, Kelsay said.
