School Board Race: Slim Pickings for a Progressive

There are slim pickings in the school board race in Iowa City/Johnson County. None of the three announced candidates are exactly "progressive" in their values, but somehow the Press-Citizen editorial board managed to "greenlight" registered Republican Deborah Thornton and Gayle Klouda for the seats. Mike Cooper, who has potential conflicts of interest due to his connections to educational testing giants, Pearson Educational and ACT, Inc. was not endorsed.

To learn more about these candidates, there will be a Iowa City Community School District Board of Directors Candidates' Forum on Tuesday, September 4, 7:00 - 9:00 pm in the Board Room of the ICCSD Central Administration Office, 509 S. Dubuque Street.

This will be the public’s opportunity to hear the candidates talk about their vision for the Iowa City school district and to ask the candidates questions. The school board election is Tuesday, September 11. This event is co-sponsored by the Districtwide Parents’ Organization and The Gazette.
