Tonight is Karl Rove's opportunity to discuss his career in public service at the IMU.
"Reflections From The Architect."
Admission is free and open to the public, doors will open at 6:30 p.m., on February 17th at the east entrance of the main lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union. Seating is on a first come, first served basis, with a scheduled start time of 7:30 p.m.
At 5:30 a counter-group will be providing information about his "architecture" in the South Room of the IMU.
No one I know wants to limit free speech and universities should be places of intellectual dialogue. Therefore, wouldn't be more educative for liberals and conservatives to intellectually discuss issues rather than to create these "I talk, you listen" situations?
I think conservatives in our area have a point when they say their views are not as valued in academic discussions, but I believe it is equally true that the liberal viewpoint is often shut out in economic, theological. and other areas of society.
I hope that differences in opinion can lead to real discussions to solve the harder problems that communities and countries have to make.
As for Karl Rove, bring him on!--Encourage him to donate his $40,000 speaker fee to the ACLU who works harder than any organization to preserve free speech.
As Hubert Humphrey once said, "The right to be heard does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously."
