Michael E. Matthes, began work in the Des Moines City Manager’s Office in 1996 after obtaining a B.A. in History from Graceland College and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Iowa State University.
As the Assistant City Manager, he is responsible for a variety of special assignments with all City departments. In addition, Mike assumes all of the duties of the City Manager when the City Manager and Deputy City Manager are out of town.
Previously, Matthes served as the city’s housing agency director and is the interim director of Information Technology.
Matthes was a finalist for a city manager position in Blaine, Minnesota, but declined to interview.
