Demand for corn is rising as more ethanol plants come online and others are constructed. The rush to the corn-based fuel additive has pushed prices for corn over $4 a bushel on commodities markets, up from about $2.25 a year ago.
As a result, some people worry that as ethanol producers, grain exporters, and the U.S. food industry jockey for the nation's supply of corn, retail food prices may rise.
"The higher corn prices have resulted in higher prices for poultry and livestock producers," said Wallace Tyner, an agricultural economist at Purdue University.
