Read All About It: Obama Endorsed 3 to 1 Over McCain
Editor and Publisher keeps an ongoing tally about which newspapers are endorsing which candidates. As a frame of reference, by E & P's count, John Kerry barely edging George W. Bush in endorsements in 2004 by 213 to 205. At the moment, the count stands at 94 endorsements for Barack Obama and 28 for John McCain. At the moment only the "trendsetting" Storm Lake Times has made an endorsement in Iowa--for Barack Obama.
Note: in parentheses, the paper's endorsement in 2004 of Bush or Kerry). As of 10/19/08

Ed Fallon Endorsed Over Leonard Boswell by Des Moines Register
Does an endorsement by the Des Moines Register have significance in this race, particularly when Boswell's coffers have been filled by lobby dollars and his name recognition--heightened by the ability to send "Congressional information" to his district for free--usually hold sway? That's for the voters to decide. But, as we learned in the 2nd District in 2006, when a college professor with even less name recognition, Dave Loebsack beat long-serving, moderate (and frankly with a voting record very much like Leonard Boswell) Jim Leach, nothing is for certain until the voters make it so.

Obama Gains New Endorsements, Takes in $40 Million
Highly respected former Indiana congressman Lee Hamilton, the top Democrat on the 9/11 Commission, endorsed Obama on Wednesday, as did Wyoming Gov. Dave Freudenthal, a former Clinton administration appointee. This is on the heels of Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar announcing her support for Obama on Monday, and earlier high-profile endorsements by Pennsylvania Sen. Robert Casey and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.
Meanwhile, in North Carolina former John Edwards strategist, Joe Trippi said, "I really believe May 6 has the potential to be everything. Every day you see increased pressure on Hillary Clinton about why she's staying in, and if she could win in North Carolina it would shut down that kind of talk and open up the possibility she could get there" to the nomination."

Dodd To Endorse Obama
Democratic Sen. Christopher Dodd of Connecticut plans to endorse former presidential rival Barack Obama.
Dodd will endorse his colleague, a senator from Illinois, in Cleveland on Tuesday, according to a Democratic official close to Dodd who requested anonymity because no formal announcement had been made.
Dodd's support, coupled with his liberal credentials, could provide a boost for Obama as major contests near in big states such as Ohio and Texas on March 4. Obama has won some key Democratic endorsements in recent weeks, including Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy, a close friend of Dodd.
Obama and rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton had been vying for Dodd's support since he exited the presidential race after a poor showing in the Iowa caucus last month. Dodd, who won his Senate seat in 1980 and chaired the Democratic National Committee from 1995-1996, has long-standing ties to the Clintons.

PolState Endorse Edwards
With Al Gore not running - a smart man generally right about the big picture and the future of the future - John Edwards gets the nod as the best candidate out there.
There’s a lot that’s gone wrong in the last almost-eight years, most at the urging and the behest and the whimsy of President George W. Bush. He made me far more a partisan as my brain went running and screaming away from most anything he set his mind to accomplish. I cringed as he took advantage of tragedy after tragedy to further deeply damaging schisms in the foundation of a once great country. If there were any good ideas in this presidency there was no way I trusted the motivations or that once begun it wouldn’t be completely bolloxed up by the president and his Branch Divideans.
That damage, often drowning in legalese, semantics and sub-clauses needs someone who can argue better than anyone else. Getting elbow-deep in the intricacy of the laws is John Edwards’ bailiwick. There’s no one else that I would trust more to roll back the signing statements and laws that has made the country a pantomime mockery of democracy.
He’s used to tackling companies with big wallets and big-mouthed spokespersons. In this area he’ll be a leader. In deploying troops he will be wise, cautious even, as if he had served himself.

Edwards Endorsed by Miners and Steelworkers Unions
From NY Times
PITTSBURGH – In a city that still maintains strong ties to the steel and mining industries, Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards received the endorsement of two powerful unions that represent their workers.
Today the United Steelworkers and United Mine Workers of America, which have a combined 1.8 million members, threw their support behind Mr. Edwards. His campaign said the endorsements gave him “the largest bloc of union support” of any of the presidential candidates so far.
In a statement announcing the Labor Day endorsement, the steel union cited Mr. Edwards’s electability in the general election — a theme his campaign has been pushing as a way to set him apart from top rivals Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.
“The union movement is not just important for the past, it is crucial to strengthening and growing the middle class in America, crucial to lifting millions of Americans out of poverty,” Mr. Edwards said while visiting a region of the country where the steel and manufacturing businesses have declined.
Wearing blue jeans and a windbreaker displaying the U.S.W. and U.M.W.A. logos, Mr. Edwards spoke for about ten minutes to union members and supporters who gathered outside the Mellon sports arena here. He used the opportunity to highlight his health care plan, trade policies and the issue of safety for mine workers in the wake of the Utah mine disaster.
“I promise you that when I am president of the United States we will not have a mine company executive who is responsible for the safety of mine workers,” he said. “We will have somebody who actually understands what needs to be done to keep workers safe who are toiling in the mines every single day.”
As president, Mr. Edwards also pledged to help strengthen the union movement in America by making the case to Congress and the public for labor law reform that would ensure the right to organize and collectively bargain.
The former North Carolina senator has been campaigning hard for the organized labor vote, and last week he also won the backing of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, which has about half a million members.
