On the first day of his new term, Donald Trump blanket pardoned over 1500 people who rioted in the very rotunda where he accepted the responsibility for a second time to uphold the Constitution of the United States at his Inauguration today. In a stroke of the pen, he made it plain, that he has no use for the Constitution or the legal system (except to seek retribution), in his thirst to exert influence and power in his vision of making America great again, again. The law enforcement officers he claims are so important and many of whom were injured and killed on 1/6/21--now know what he really thinks of them. The Flag that he ceremoniously hugged at CPAC meetings, which was stomped by those he called to the Capitol, should have been rightly at half-mast today, instead of celebrating his return to power. To say that elections have consequences is putting it lightly.
To be clear, Trump and his ilk are not trying to build a new Republican party, they are building a movement toward thuggery and authoritarianism. The voters had the chance to stop this movement, but decency flew out the window in the pursuit of scapegoating immigrants and laying the blame for economic woes on a president who did not choose to sign his name in gigantic letters on the checks they received to keep them afloat until COVID subsided. It took a power-hungry group of hyper-wealthy, and let me say un-American individuals to drive a wedge and lead to day one of what is likely to be the longest four-year term in the memory of this nation. They reinvented Chicken Little, and they made the sky fall through the smoke and mirrors that political action groups make possible and the political arm-twisting that goes on to limit the voter base. Add to it a broad disregard for facts thanks to social media and the disregard of mass media. A sucker may not be born every day, but they do seem to vote every four years.
The United States is being gutted by greed. Make no mistake about it. Watch as Bitcoin becomes a large part of the economy engine. Watch as a new class of instant rich people creates a financial goliath that not only believes greed is good but the only way forward to control world politics and limit the rise of the poor. Watch as a mobilized, militarized goon squad deals with their idea of undesirables and inconvenient others. Watch a handful of elected leaders reduce the government's checks and balances through corrupt practices that neither drain the swamp or create the efficiencies that are promised.
The opening bell has been rung. The fix is in. The blows are coming in swiftly and mercilessly.
