The U.S. Senate last night voted 74-24 in favor of the Amtrak reauthorization last night.
The bill -- which passed both houses by veto-proof majorities -- now moves to the President for his signature.
The bill authorizes a number of programs over five years to build passenger rail service in the Midwest and Nationwide:
$5.9 billion for capital grants to Amtrak;
$2.9 billion for operating support to Amtrak;
$1.9 billion in grants to states to invest in passenger rail projects.
The bill also contains new safety requirements for freight and passenger railroads which could greatly assist in our efforts to develop high-speed rail in the Midwest.
